What is logging? Logging is a term used in forestry that describes when trees or logs are moved from on property to primarily a sawmill.
When a forester marks your property for selective timber they are picking and choosing trees that are of most value to the lands’ long-term plan. Tree value is based on the diameter of the tree and the supply and demand of the market. But don’t worry- these are not the only requirement foresters look for when marking. A good forester is also looking for trees that are harming your property by absorbing the local nutrients and prohibiting the smaller trees to grow as well as many other factors like health of the forest and storm damage. 1. Increases the value of your property– Veteran trees have deep roots in the soil and require more nutrients to continue flourishing. This is great for the large trees but prohibits the succession of the habitat for new growth on the land. This is because there are fewer nutrients in the ground and they are blocking the sun and rain from giving the small trees the essentials for growth. By logging the mature trees it allows the growth of several others which will increase of value long term with higher valued trees.
2. Safety– Mother nature has a way of making her presence known. When she does make a visit there is no telling what damage she may do to the land. Logging trees increase the safety of the property by eliminating dead trees, or trees that may otherwise fall over from overgrowth killing those trees in its path. As a forester, they have an art of “painting” specific trees all while keeping in mind the logging process for a safe and precise tree placement and easy haul.

Provides essential everyday materials– The forestry industry has traditionally been given a bad reputation, however, one thing that is commonly forgotten are the products that are produced as a result of logging. Some of these products are wine corks, materials for tools, henna dye, rubber, paper for books, magazines, cereal boxes and more. Without trees, we simply can not live and that is why it is important they maintain or increase the health and quality of trees.
